How to cut your own Christmas tree
Cutting your own tree is a good family outing and you get the freshest tree possible. We list 1062 choose-and-cut farms. Here is what helps.
Before you go
- Measure: ceiling height and the spot where the tree will stand, including width.
- Check the farm: opening days, payment (some are cash only) and whether they lend saws.
- Bring: gloves, boots that can get muddy, rope or straps and a blanket for the car roof.
At the farm
- Walk around the tree and check that the trunk is straight and the shape suits you from all sides.
- Run a branch through your hand. A fresh tree loses only a few needles.
- Cut low and straight. Many farms have staff who help, shake out loose needles and net the tree.
At home
- Put the tree in water soon, and check the water every day.
- Keep it away from heaters and fireplaces.
